Young people thrive when given the opportunity to learn about the world around them.

Exposure. Connection. Horizon Expansion.

IT BEGINS in the classroom during out-of-school time hours, the most dangerous hours for young people in the challenging neighborhoods we serve. In the classroom there are youth, a Culture Connector, and a stretch of time carved out expressly for learning something new. A PLACE has been chosen for the DISCOVERY (region of study). Maybe New York, maybe New Orleans, Maybe Haiti or Brazil…

The goal is twofold:

1. In-class CULTURTAL IMMERSION- as deep as it can get, into a distant place and traditions of that place's people.

2. A culminating JOURNEY TO THE DISCOVERY- this allows for many "firsts" for our young people as they have the life-changing experience of travel.

During our region-specific culture studies we explore a people/place by learning about their politics and engaging with their arts; getting acquainted with their heroes and hearing accounts of their struggles. Their literature, film, music, and dance; activism, advocacy and calls to action… we experience it all. We do this via guest speakers, media, group exercises, field trips, and more. Our programs culturally educate and enrich in unique ways that aren't readily accessible in our young people's day-to-day lives.

The DISCOVERY begins in the CLASSROOM. And with YOUR SUPPORT it leads youth to THE WORLD beyond their neighborhoods. It only takes ONE JOURNEY to completely change the trajectory of a young person's life.
